XEMICS SA and ROCKWELL AUTOMATION
announce the joint successful development of an industrial radio frequency tag
ASIC dedicated for remote automotive fabrication process control.

Rockwell Automation is an important provider of radio frequency identification (RF-ID) tag products that monitor the various operations involved in industrial fabrication processes. The passive (battery-free) wireless tags are fastened to the element moving in the factory chain and used to identify the item throughout the manufacturing process.
The tag board measures approximately 8 x 4 cm and contains all of the circuit elements required to complete the RF link including the two RF antenna for transmission and reception at 1.83 GHz and 915 Mhz respectively. The energy powering the RF-ID tag is derived exclusively from the RF signal.
The heart of the system is a small low-power, low voltage mixed signal ASIC which includes an analog part developed by XEMICS and a digital block designed by Kasten Chase in Mississauga, Ontario.
The analog functions include the following:
- filtering and amplification of the signals
- conversion to and from digital format
- protection against over-voltage
- generation of a fully integrated high precision system clock oscillator
- elements for an intelligent power management
The digital subsystem enables the communication protocols between the tag board and the different readers, the interface to a non-volatile memory block. Digital complexity is around 90'000 transistors.
In addition, this circuit has been built to maximize flexibility towards applications in the following ways:
1. level of available power supply (activation of a voltage doubler function),
2. size of the external memory
XEMICS has fabricated the ASIC using an advanced mixed-mode, 0.5 um-CMOS technology that allows both excellent analog performances and high-level silicon density.
A non-volatile memory (EEPROM) chip is glued and bonded on top of the ASIC (Chip-on-Chip technique). The memory records, maintains and gives back the fabrication parameters upon request from the reader.
The ASIC provides a communication link with the reader at speeds up to 400 kbps. It contains its own system clock at 400 kHz, (5% accuracy), is able to work at supply voltages down to 1.2 volt (with the doubler activated), consumes 300 uA at full operating mode, and can sustain the severe physical and environmental conditions associated with the automotive assembly process.
