A device that permits microwave energy to pass in one direction while providing
high isolation to reflected energy in the reverse direction. Isolators are used at the
input of Communications-band microwave amplifiers to provide good reverse
isolation and minimize VSWR. An isolator consists of a microwave circulator with
one port (port 3) terminated in the system characteristic impedance.
