Market Description
PCS-TAG-5 (PCS 1900 / GSM)

US PCS is the label given to the digital Personal Communications standard for North America. Frequency allocations have been assigned by the FCC in the 1900 MHz range, and most have been auctioned to specific service providers, with a small band reserved for unlicensed use. To date there are seven different major standards (PCS-TAG-1 through PCS-TAG-7) proposed for US PCS use.

PCS-TAG-5, more commonly referred to as PCS-1900, is the version based on GSM / DCS-1800, a global standard for digital cellular communications that originated in Europe and uses GMSK modulation. Proponents cite both the proven nature of the underlying technology and the availability of components as points in favor of this standard. Along with the IS-95 CDMA-based PCS-TAG-2, PCS-TAG-5 is presently one of the most successful US PCS standards, and was the first to be put into operation.
