Market Description

Ku Band / DBS

Ku band direct satellite broadcast television, also called Direct Broadcast Satellite or DBS is named for the letter designation of the 12 GHz band in which it broadcasts. DBS is a mature but growing market; initial roll-out was in Europe and Japan; the US has recently come on-line with RCA/Hughes Direct TV. The higher frequency of operation allows the use of a relatively small (30 - 90 cm diameter) receiving dish or antenna.

Some systems are designed to receive more than one satellite, or input channels of two different polarities. These systems may require multiple LNA line-ups and high frequency switches. Other systems have multiple outputs to allow a single antenna to feed multiple television sets. These systems may make use of switches and dual channel IFs.
