Wireless cable television or MMDS evolved from the North American educational service known as Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS). It provides an alternative to franchised cable TV for the delivery of audio and video entertainment; up to 33 video channels can be relayed to subscribers. An inherent advantage of MMDS is that it does not require the installation of costly cable networks, making it particularly attractive for installation in third world countries. The system operates in the 2-3 GHz range.
