Philips is first with Universal Serial Bus products
Eindhoven, The Netherlands - 8 November 1996 - USB (Universal Serial Bus)
has been defined by a group of PC and telephone industry leaders and
supports "hot Plug&Play" operation of PC peripherals. This makes it
considerably easier for an end user to set up and use peripherals without
having to open the PC, which is particularly important as PCs evolve into
complex multimedia machines with numerous peripherals. The peripherals are
detected and configured automatically as soon as they are physically
attached via a simple standard plug.
Philips is a leader in USB technology with a long list of firsts:
- At the February 1996 USB developers conference, Philips demonstrated the
first soft control of a monitor over USB and a working prototype of a USB
audio DAC.
- At the April WinHEC '96 in the USA, Philips demonstrated the first
standalone USB hub and also the first working USB speaker. The first
demonstration of audio playback from USB using Philips equipment was used
in the key-note address by Bill Gates, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft
- Shortly afterwards, Philips showed the first monitor with integrated USB hub.
- Philips is responsible for defining the generic USB drivers for both
Audio and Monitors.
- Philips has announced the first monitor range to include a USB hub.
- Philips has announced the first USB transceiver ICs to be commercially available
