New Microcontrollers from Philips Semiconductors Meet On Screen Display and Control Requirements of all TV Standards

Philips Semiconductors' commitment to providing complete hardware and software solutions to the TV market is well known. Now, for the first time, a new range of Global Control Platform Microcontrollers from Philips provides a truly cost-effective global microcontroller solution, offering software compatibility across the entire range through the use of an 80C51 core, and hardware compatibility through pin-alignment. These new microcontrollers complement the company's existing range of global multi-standard video, sound, deflection and tuning ICs.

In addition to providing functions such as remote control, local keypad handling, PLL or VS tuning, and DC or I2C-bus control of video, sound and deflection processors, these new microcontrollers feature a wide range of On-Screen-Display (OSD) facilities for TV-Menu control. Their OSD features include the handling of complex ideograms for Chinese and Japanese languages, Teletext characters for Fastext and TOP systems, and line-21 decoding for Closed Captioning (CC). They also include software support for functions such as ATS (Automatic Tuning and Sort), ACI (Automatic Channel Installation), EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) and V-Chip (Violence-Chip) applications.

"This unique range of microcontrollers provides manufacturers with a global control platform that is supported by a range of advanced software products and services," said Leonard Lloyd of Philips Semiconductors' International Marketing and Sales. "The result is a total system solution that our customers can use with confidence to quickly develop TV receivers for all regions of the world," he added.

These new microcontrollers add to Philips Semiconductors' extensive range of bus-controlled TV ICs, which already includes high-performance frequency synthesisers, mixer/oscillators, video decoders, Teletext decoders, picture-in-picture (PIP) processors and motion compensation processors. Philips Semiconductors supplements its range of integrated teletext, CC/OSD, and TV control microcontrollers with a wide range of 'classic' Integrated Video-Input-Processor/Teletext decoders (IVTs) for bus-controlled standalone Teletext, plus a wide range of classic and new OSD products for character-based, DRCS, and bit-mapped on-screen-displays. All these ICs and chip-sets are supported by comprehensive hardware and software development tools.
