Philips Semiconductors introduces new CRT deflection transistors

Larger screen sizes, higher screen resolutions, better picture quality and lower price are the driving forces behind the TV and computer monitor industries. With the introduction today of its new BU45xx range of 1500 V horizontal deflection transistors, Philips Semiconductors has made it significantly easier for TV and monitor manufacturers to achieve these four important objectives, all of which depend on deflection circuit performance.

"The BU45xx range of deflection transistors can be used to improve the performance of any application where our BU25xx range is currently used,"commented product marketing manager David Sharples. "Yet, as well as their performance advantages, these new types actually sell for less than their BU25xx equivalents."

Philips Semiconductors, the largest European semiconductor manufacturer, produces the BU45xx range in its new PowerFAB1 wafer processing facility in Hazel Grove, UK. The transistors have a new emitter design that significantly reduces their switching losses, giving them the lowest dissipation per unit area currently available.

These new transistors are specified for a very wide range of TV and monitor applications - from 14-inch monochrome TV sets to 21-inch, 130 kHz workstation monitors. Later this year Philips Semiconductors will release a complementary range with integrated damper diodes, and in 1999 it will introduce the BU47xx range of 1700 V devices.

Philips Semiconductors, a division of Philips Electronics NV, headquartered in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, is the ninth largest semiconductor supplier in the world and the fourth largest supplier of discretes in the world. Philips Semiconductors' innovations in digital audio, video, and mobile technology position the company as a leader in the consumer, multimedia and wireless communications markets. Sales offices are located in all major markets around the world and are supported by systems labs.
