Business News From Philips Semiconductors

Philips demonstrates its digital and wireless expertise at Cable & Satellite Mediacast

Philips Semiconductors, Europe's leading semiconductor manufacturer, and Philips Remote Control Systems (RCS), world's second largest supplier of wireless input and control devices, will be attending Cable & Satellite Mediacast in Earls Court 2, London from 17-19 May 1999. Journalists are warmly invited to visit the Philips' stand (no. 611).

Amongst the demonstrations at the stand Philips Semiconductors will be showing its Set-Top Box (STB) capability with the Product info on SAA7214 SAA7214 MHEG5 decoder for processing audio and video streams in STB applications, which is a new feature of the company's STB5660 STB platform. The next generation STB platform, the STB5860 will also be shown, which offers full support for OpenTV, PerfecTV, BSkyB and Canal+. The STB5860 highlights Philips Semiconductors' commitment to producing ever more advanced STB platforms, which continuously extend STB capabilities to encompass the latest digital broadcast services.

Further demos will include Philips Semiconductors' full duplex, high-speed (400 Mbits/s) audio/video link layer controller, the PDI1394L21, integrated into a typical small home network. This device is the first A/V link to support simple processor-based manipulation of MPEG-2 transport streams - the standard compression scheme for many set-top box, digital storage, and digital TV applications. Also the Zero-IF solution for digital satellite front-end or network interface modules, which supports 950-2150 MHz satellite broadcasts covering all DVB and DBS channels, will be demonstrated.

Also at Cable & Satellite, Philips RCS will be demonstrating a wide range of wireless solutions, from text input, to video gaming, from touch screen technology to USB interfaces.
