Philips Semiconductors is an active participant and adjunct member of the EDN Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC). This consortium, co-sponsored by industry-recognized EDN magazine, was formed in August 1997 to address the industry-wide need for standard benchmarking suites for embedded control systems. Philips Semiconductors and the other leading semiconductor companies of the consortium meet regularly to discuss issues and test benchmarks for applications that are in market demand. The formation of the EEMBC reflects and validates the growing importance of the embedded market in the overall electronics industry. As a charter member, Philips Semiconductors plays an unbiased role in promoting and establishing awareness of the EEMBC. Philips Semiconductors currently participates in the automotive/industrial subcommittee to better develop the benchmark and standard needs of its global customer base in these markets. Long considered a market leader in microcontroller technology, Philips Semiconductors' goal is to assist customers in evaluating available products and aid the industry in choosing the appropriate 4-, 8- and 16-bit devices for various embedded applications. "The goal of this consortium is to establish benchmarks for the entire range of devices within the embedded microprocessor and DSP market," said Markus Levy, president of EEMBC. "In working closely with Philips Semiconductors and all of the charter members, we will develop a set of industry standards that display a high level of realism and will reflect the requirements of today's market." About EEMBC Benchmarking fairness is provided through the EEMBC Certification Laboratory LLC (ECL) with testing sites in Texas and California. ECL results are posted on the EEMBC Web site at www.eembc.org. The EEMBC Test Harness guarantees a reliable and standard application- programming interface (API) for downloading and running benchmark kernels. EEMBC members are AMD, ARC, ARM, Analog Devices Inc., BOPS, Fujitsu, Hitachi America Ltd., IBM Corporation, Integrated Device Technology, Intel, Lucent, MIPS Technologies Inc., Mitsubishi, Motorola, QED, National Semiconductor, NEC, Panasonic, Philips Semiconductors, SandCraft, STMicroelectronics, Siemens (Infineon Technologies), Sun Microsystems, Tensilica, TI, Toshiba.
