SC28L92 Dual UART reduces inventory management costs and simplifies design selection

Philips Semiconductors, the world's leading supplier of Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) devices, today announced the availability of the SC28L92 Dual UART, the third member of its new IMPACT line of communication devices. Philips Semiconductors certifies that as a member of its IMPACT family, the SC28L92 operates at 3.3 and 5.0 volts, with either the Intel or Motorola bus and fully supports both the commercial and industrial temperature ranges. The versatility of Philips Semiconductors' SC28L92 provides designers with a flexible solution that operates in multiple environments and streamlines the procurement process as well.

The Philips Semiconductors Data Communications Group unveiled the IMPACT line of products, which is intended to simplify device selection and reduce inventory management costs. IMPACT products include the Dual UART SC28L92, the 4-channel SC28L194 and the 8-channel SC28L198. Philips Semiconductors' unique IMPACT design requirements enable SC28L92 operation in eight unique environments and provide a significant reduction in part inventory by combining eight part types in one package.

"With the IMPACT family, Philips Semiconductors simplifies customers' manufacturing flow by providing one part with universal applicability," explained Alvin Wong, manager, data communications for Philips Semiconductors. "Inventory of part types is reduced and availability within customers' assembly operations is dramatically improved."

The most recent addition to the Philips Semiconductors IMPACT line, the SC28L92 Dual UART, is a single-chip CMOS-LSI communications device that provides two full-duplex asynchronous receiver/transmitter channels in a single package. It interfaces directly with microprocessors and may be used in a polled or interrupt driven function. The SC28L92 is a pin and function equivalent of all Dual UARTS offered by Philips Semiconductors, with the following added features: 16 character receiver, 16 character transmit FIFOs, watch dog timer for each receiver, mode register, extended baud rate and overall faster speeds, programmable receiver and transmit interrupts.

Samples of the SC28L92 are available now in both a 44-pin plastic leaded chip carrier and a 44-pin plastic quad flat pack from Philips Semiconductors.
