Philips Semiconductors, Europe's largest semiconductor company, has released a new family of combined damper/modulation diodes, for deflection in CRTs for monitors and TVs. These next generation devices represent a real innovation, as Philips Semiconductors can now supply different device combinations in a single package, essentially delivering products tailor-made to individual OEM requirements. The new family, called the BYM35x, will simplify design processes, and reduce design and manufacturing costs. "This is a new approach to creating damper/modulation diodes," said David Sharples, International Product Marketing Manager in Hazel Grove, UK, where these products are manufactured. "Essentially Philips Semiconductors has developed a new technology allowing us to put two application-specific diodes in the same package - a damper diode and a modulation diode - so our products can be adapted to customer designs, not the other way around. We expect sales of this type of device to grow extremely rapidly, even in what is a relatively mature market." Philips has a long history in deflection products and complete chip-sets for TVs and monitors, and these new devices are simply the next step in the company's aim to reduce overall device count in its system solutions. As well as reducing component count and helping achieve cost reductions, these new diodes reduce overall power dissipation and actually improve final on-screen performance for end-users, helping OEMs to more easily differentiate their products. Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics, headquartered in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, is the eighth largest semiconductor supplier based on Dataquest's 1998 report 1). Discrete semiconductors are central to the company's operations and it is the third largest discretes supplier in the world, with the target of becoming the world's largest. It has a very broad and deep product range grouped into three specific competences: Power, RF and General Application products which cover all application areas. Philips Semiconductors is supported by a worldwide network of systems laboratories and product application groups to develop complete, dedicated solutions to specific customer requirements.
