For a total insight into telecommunications innovations, visit the Philips stand, Telecom '99 (8th World Telecom Exhibition and Forum), taking place at the Palexpo, Geneva, 10-17 October
![]() Further demonstrations can be seen at the French pavilion, Hall 5, Stand 5071.154, where newly acquired VLSI Technology, a subsidiary of Philips Semiconductors, is located. Virtually every mobile phone manufactured in the world contains components supplied by Philips...Philips Semiconductors' acquisition of VLSI Technology in June, makes the division better equipped than ever to deliver optimum solutions for the dynamic telecommunications handset market, set to grow dramatically by over 360% by 2003. The combined customer base of the two companies is virtually a comprehensive list of all the mobile phone manufacturers in the world. With 100% of key technologies and competencies now in-house, Philips Semiconductors will showcase at Telecom '99 solutions that will create the new generation of data-centric mobile communications products, bringing services such as mobile Internet and personal multimedia to consumer mass markets. New developments highlighted at Telecom '99 will include a new single-chip baseband solution for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) over GSM. This allows data to be transferred across the wireless domain at high speed, thereby improving mobile applications such as fax, e-mail and paging - an important step towards 3rd generation mobile products. Also highlighted will be Philips Semiconductors' roadmap for Bluetooth -- the small form factor, low-cost, short range radio link that will revolutionize the way laptop PCs, mobile phones and other portable devices are interconnected and which promises to pave the way for affordable wireless home networking.
